AR hazard perception app

Spotting hazards before they cause harm is a core skill for anyone leading work on a construction site, and it is a skill that fades without practice. We built Murphy Group an iOS app that turns hazard perception into a repeatable, scored exercise their frontline leadership team can run anywhere.

The challenge

Hazard perception is usually trained with photographs and discussion, which tests recognition of a flat image rather than the ability to read a whole scene. The industry has long known the difference: on a real site, hazards sit above, behind, and around you.

Murphy wanted their frontline leaders to practise scanning a full environment, and to be able to do it in a depot or training room rather than waiting for the right conditions on a live site.

What we built

The app places a detailed 3D construction scene in front of the user, viewable in AR through the iPad camera so the rendered site sits in the real room, or in a standard 3D view, with a toggle between the two. Users move around the scene, inspect it from any angle, and tap the hazards they find.

Each exercise is timed and scored per scene, so results are comparable across people and across attempts. The growing scene library covers situations such as lifting operations and confined spaces, each modelled with the hazards a competent leader should catch.

It is a native iOS app distributed to Murphy through TestFlight, with regular releases adding scenes and refinements, most recently versions 2.4 in July 2025 and 2.5 in October 2025.

The outcome

The app is in active use by Murphy's frontline leadership team as part of how they keep hazard-spotting sharp, with the scene library continuing to grow.
