Interactive vehicle health check
Tackling the 80 per cent of fleet MOT failures that were entirely avoidable
Unipart manages Sky's vehicle fleet, and every year around 80 per cent of the fleet's MOT failures were identified as avoidable. The faults were the kind a driver could catch in a routine walkaround, but the standard health check guidance was not landing with engineers in a way that changed habits. Sky needed a better way to show drivers and engineers why these checks matter, and what good looks like at each step.
We produced two versions of the same content, so Sky could reach every engineer in the way that suited them.
The first is an interactive eLearning module with a 3D vehicle the user can explore, supported by video filmed in and around the real vehicle that walks through each health check and why it matters. It is SCORM wrapped and integrated with Sky's learning management system, so every engineer can be put through it and completion tracked centrally.
The second is an augmented reality app deployed across the fleet's iPads. Engineers walk around a full-scale virtual Sky van, guided through the same checks by tapping hotspots on the vehicle itself, with a short video explaining each step.
Both versions cover the same checklist, from tyres and wheels to under the bonnet, mirrors, glass and lights, seats and seatbelts, the dashboard and the brakes. The eLearning gives everyone a consistent grounding and a record of completion. The AR app turns the same material into something hands-on: the engineer moves around the vehicle, selects each area, and sees the check explained in place, the same way they would on a real walkaround. One set of content, two routes to the same understanding.
The programme gives Sky a single, consistent standard for vehicle health checks across the whole fleet, delivered through the LMS for assurance and through AR on the iPads already in engineers' hands. By making the walkaround interactive rather than a document to read, it targets exactly the avoidable failures that were costing the fleet time and money at MOT.
