Reality Check 7: The Future of Extended Reality and Digital Twin Technology

By Jamie O’Donnell, Co-Founder & CEO, Boundless Immersive

At Boundless Immersive, we’re always looking ahead to where immersive technology meets real-world application. One of the most exciting areas of convergence right now is between Extended Reality (XR) and Digital Twin technology.

October 8, 2025

Digital twins are virtual replicas of physical spaces that pull in live data, they are already transforming industries from manufacturing to urban planning. They offer a complete, data-driven mirror of the physical world, continuously updated in real time. What’s missing, though, is a truly seamless way to present that data back to the user in their everyday environment.

That’s where XR comes in.

Imagine wearing lightweight glasses that project data directly into your field of view, contextual overlays that appear as you move through a space. They’re not intrusive; they don’t block your view or your hands. Instead, they give you instant, actionable insight from your digital twin. Whether you’re in a factory, a construction site, or managing a smart building, you can see exactly what’s happening around you in real time. That’s a game changer for almost every industry.

We’re already seeing the beginnings of this shift. Just as it once seemed impossible to make a call on your watch, we’ll soon wonder how we ever worked without smart headwear that integrates live data and augmented guidance. Within the next decade, I expect wearable XR devices to replace much of what our phones do today including navigation, communication, and even entertainment. All while keeping our hands free and our attention grounded in the physical world.

The implications go far beyond convenience. Imagine walking through a city and instantly accessing live environmental data, or looking in a mirror and visualising yourself in different clothes before buying. Imagine field engineers receiving live maintenance data projected over equipment, or architects visualising design updates in real time on site.

At Boundless Immersive, we believe data is only as powerful as its delivery. XR bridges that gap, transforming how we see, interpret, and act on information. As these technologies converge, they will reshape how we interact with both the physical and digital worlds, quietly but profoundly.

The future is not about escaping reality. It’s about enhancing it. And that’s exactly where XR and digital twin technology meet.
